Pi Beta Phi was founded April 28, 1867 at Monmouth College
in Monmouth, Illinois as I.C. Sorosis. It was the first secret society for women to be based on the Greek-letter fraternities of men. Pi Beta Phi was founded at a time when very few women were allowed or encouraged to pursue their higher education, and as such provided a bond and sense of unity for women at these institutions.
You may notice that Pi Beta Phi is a Fraternity for Women, not a sorority. Pi Beta Phi was founded before the word sorority was coined, so though you may hear us grouped into the category of sorority, by technicality we actually are not one.
